Annually on a single night in January, a national Housing and Urban Development (HUD) count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness takes place.
Housing insecurity data helps state and local decision makers understand the current housing needs and what progress is being made. It also aids Marshall County community leaders in seeking resources needed to address housing insecurities and help some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
In addition to the HUD survey, United Way of Marshall County also conducts a county-wide informal housing survey during the end of January to gather information that may not otherwise be gathered on the formal count. This information includes gathering the number of families and individuals who have relied on the township trustee, churches, or charities with housing or housing related expenses; individuals facing eviction; individuals living in vehicles, couch surfing, or other places not meant for habitation.
